He’s So Willin’ To Make Whoopee

I have always loved the chance to learn more about some of the greatest singers of the 20th Century. They all have amazing life stories and sometimes tragic demises.

Dinah Washington is credited with being one of the most popular singers of the 1950s. She was incredibly diverse and sang comfortably in various genres – jazz, blues, pop, gospel – this lady could sing! I have chosen just one of the songs that she makes sensational. This is Dinah Washington with “Makin’ Whoopee”.

Another bride, another June
Another sunny honeymoon
Another season, another reason
For makin' whoopee

A lot of shoes, a lot of rice
The groom is nervous; he answers twice
It's really killin'
That he's so willin' to make whoopee

Picture a little love nest
Down where the roses cling
Picture the same sweet love nest
Think what a year can bring

He's washin' dishes and baby clothes
He's so ambitious he even sews
But don't forget, folks
That's what you get, folks, for makin' whoopee

Another year or maybe less
What's this I hear? Well, you can't confess
She feels neglected, and he's suspected
Of makin' whoopee

She sits alone 'most every night
He doesn't phone her; he doesn't write
He says he's busy, but she says, "Is he?"
He's makin' whoopee

He doesn't make much money
Only five thousand per
Some judge who thinks he's funny
Says, "You'll pay six to her"

He says, "Now, Judge, suppose I fail?"
The judge says, "Budge right into jail"
You'd better keep her; I think it's cheaper
Than makin' whoopee

You'd better keep her
I know it's cheaper
Than makin' whoopee

Your Goodbye

When I saw Jim’s theme for this week I wanted to share my latest love. I have been falling in love with Billie Holiday lately. There is a movie that I have not seen yet, but I have read a lot about “The United States vs Billie Holiday”. But forget the movie for now – that voice! I had no idea how amazing Billie Holiday was until I started searching through the tracks she recorded.

It is because I heard this song recently, called “All Of Me” that I have chosen it. I have included the Billie Holiday recording and because Andra Day deserves all the awards she has been nominated for, I have included her version for the movie.

All of me
Why not take all of me
Can't you see
I'm no good without you

Take my lips
I want to lose them
Take my arms
I'll never use them

Your goodbye
Left me with eyes that cry
How can I go on dear without you

You took the part
That once was my heart
So why not take all of me

All of me
Why not take all of me
Can't you see
I'm no good without you

Take my lips
I want to lose them
Take my arms
I'll never use them

Your goodbye
Left me with eyes that cry
How can I go on dear without you

You took the best
So why not take the rest
Baby, take all of me

Sally Is A Rock Chick

I noticed something odd this week and it made choosing a song for this week’s theme harder than I expected. Jim asked us to find songs that feature a girl’s name, so long as it starts with the letter “S”. That seemed fine. But when I typed in a few names into a lyric website, it listed song after song after song with lyrics that were not cool, not cool at all. All about what guys want to do to girls with a name beginning with S. I will leave that to your imagination. I just thought it was crazy though. Is this ok? All these songs, not about love, but about…well, I didn’t want to feature any of them.

I found a song that I never heard before. I chose it because it is sweet. This is Shwayze with the track “Sally Is A…”

Sally is a Hippie girl one day
Sally is a Rock chick the next
Sally is a Hiphop Baby then a drip pop lady
But there's one thing Sally says everyday, its
She loves me, She loves me just the way I am (yeah)
She loves me, She loves me just the way I am
(Hey, hey, hey)

I got a girl named Sally, she like to keep it trendy
One day its hippy chic, next day its gucci fendi
She got a gold chain, like it was 1980
She buys 3 magazines a week, just to see who I'm datin'
I been to Paris, London, & still.. I come back to Sally
Cuz' I know how she feels

Sally is a Hippie girl one day
Sally is a Rock chick the next
Sally is a Hiphop Baby then a drip pop lady
But there's one thing Sally says everyday, its
She loves me, She loves me just the way I am
She loves me, She loves me just the way I am
(Just the way I am)

I got a girly girl, but she's a tomboy
She like to go nuts, my little almond joy
I try to make her blush, but she's just way too tough
Yeah she's so emo with her makeup and her haircut
She's a rich girl but she could careless; American Apparel
With her dads American Express. She's a college girl
Lettin' lose at night In a mini skirt, sippin' goose and sprite
She's all around the world, she ain't your average girl
And everytime I leave, I'm comin' back to her

Sally is a Hippie girl one day
Sally is a Rock chick the next
Sally is a Hiphop Baby then a drip pop lady
But there's one thing Sally says everyday & its
She loves me, She loves me just the way I am
She loves me, She loves me just the way I am
(Just the way I am)

To all my Sally's out there, put your hearts in the air
tell me where you wanna go and I take you there
i take you there, girl I take you there I take you there
To all my Sally's out there, put your hearts in the air
tell me where you wanna go and I take you there
i take you there, girl I take you there I take you there

Happy

Songs with one word titles – we can do that! I know this might be one of the overplayed songs of the 21st centuries – but when something is this positive, you don’t mind too much.

Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” won a stack of awards and broke records. It is catchy, infectious, and hard not to smile at. How many cover videos have you seen of people at work or school dancing along to this track? It is just one of those songs that everyone knows and everyone has enjoyed the fun of. We need more happy songs in this world.

It might seem crazy what I'm about to say
Sunshine she's here, you can take a break
I'm a hot air balloon that could go to space
With the air, like I don't care, baby, by the way

Uh

(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do

Here come bad news, talking this and that (Yeah!)
Well, give me all you got, don't hold it back (Yeah!)
Well, I should probably warn you I'll be just fine (Yeah!)
No offense to you
Don't waste your time, here's why

(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do

Bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down
My level's too high to bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down, I said
Bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down
My level's too high to bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down, I said

(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
(Because I'm happy)
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you

Like A Flower Bending In The Breeze

Jim’s theme for today includes flowers. So I have taken the opportunity to feature a song that always makes me feel in the mood for romance. Yes, yes, I have my moments. There is more to me than pharmacy. Nothing could be more romantic than leading a partner around the dancefloor to a song like this.

I have chosen the Dean Martin cover of a song originally from Pablo Beltrán Ruiz, but it has been covered by a variety of artists including the Pussycat Dolls – hmm hmm. Better to stick with one of the greatest singers of romance. The song is simply called “Sway”.

CREDITS: Norman Gimbel, Luis Demetrio Traconis Molina, and Pablo Beltran Ruiz

When marimba rhythms start to play
Dance with me, make me sway
Like a lazy ocean hugs the shore
Hold me close, sway me more

Like a flower bending in the breeze
Bend with me, sway with ease
When we dance you have a way with me
Stay with me, sway with me

Other dancers may be on the floor
Dear, but my eyes will see only you
Only you have the magic technique
When we sway I go weak

I can hear the sounds of violins
Long before it begins
Make me thrill as only you know how
Sway me smooth, sway me now

Other dancers may be on the floor
Dear, but my eyes will see only you
Only you have the magic technique
When we sway I go weak

I can hear the sounds of violins
Long before it begins
Make me thrill as only you know how
Sway me smooth, sway me now
You know how
Sway me smooth, sway me now

It Will Be Forever

Songs about forever…there must be hundreds surely! I have picked a song for Jim’s Song Lyric Sunday that makes me think of a true love. Is it too idealistic? Or is the truth that sometimes we settle for less?

I am going to leave that for you to decide. The song is “When I Fall In Love”. I wanted to pick the Nat King Cole version, but I thought the duet between Celine Dion and Clive Griffin was great,

Credits: Edward Heyman and Victor Popular Young

When I fall in love
It will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love

In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun

When I give my heart
It will be completely
Or I'll never give my heart
(oh, let me give my heart)

And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
(I feel that way too)
Is when I fall in love (I fall in love) with you

When I fall in love
It will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love
(oh, I'll never never fall in love)

In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun

When I give my heart
It will be completely
Or I'll never give (I'll never give) my heart (oh, I'll never give my heart)

And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love
When I fall in love
When I fall in love with you

With A Hip Hop

Expecting everyone to be jumping this week along to Jim’s theme. As soon as I saw the choices for this week, I thought “with a hip hop the hippie the hippie to the hip hip hop and you don’t stop”.

So I’m going to do you a little favour. This first video has a snatch of the track I have picked today – the famous “Rapper’s Delight”. But at the bottom of this post I have put a longer version from The Sugarhill Gang. I think there is an even longer version on their album.

Now, what you hear is not a test, I’m rapping to the beat
And me, the groove, and my friends are gonna try to move your feet
You see I am Wonder Mike and I’d like to say “hello”
To the black, to the white, the red and the brown, the purple and yellow
But first, I gotta bang bang the boogie to the boogie
Say up jump the boogie to the bang bang boogie
Let’s rock, you don’t stop
Rock the rhythm that’ll make your body rock
Well so far you’ve heard my voice, but I brought two friends along
And next on the mic is my man Hank; come on, Hank, sing that song:

Check it out, I’m the C-A-S-A-N, the O-V-A and the rest is F-L-Y
You see, I go by the code of the Doctor of the Mix
And these reasons I’ll tell you why
You see I’m 6’1” and I’m tons of fun and I dress to a tee
You see I got more clothes than Muhammad Ali and I dress so viciously
I got bodyguards, I got two big cars, that definitely ain’t the whack
I got a Lincoln continental and a sunroof Cadillac
So after school, I take a dip in the pool, which is really off the wall
I got a color TV so I can see the Knicks play basketball
Hear me talking ’bout checkbooks, credit cards, more money
Than a sucker could ever spend
But I wouldn’t give a sucker or a bum from the Rucker
Not a dime ’til I made it again

Everybody go: Hotel, motel, whatcha gonna do today (say what?)
Cause I’ma get a fly girl, gonna get some spank and drive off in a def OJ
Everybody go: Hotel, motel, Holiday Inn
You see, if your girl starts acting up, then you take her friend

Uh Master Gee, am I mellow?
It’s on you, so what you gonna do?

Well it’s on, and on, and on, on and on
The beat don’t stop until the break of dawn
I said M-A-S, a T-E-R, a G with a double E
I said I go by the unforgettable name
Of the man they call the Master Gee
Well, my name is known all over the world
By all the foxy ladies and the pretty girls
I’m going down in history
As the baddest rapper there ever could be
Now I’m feeling the highs and you’re feeling the lows
The beat starts getting into your toes
You start popping your fingers and stomping your feet
And moving your body while you’re sitting in your seat
And then jam you start doing the freak
I said damn, right outta your seat
Then you throw your hands high in the air
You’re rocking to the rhythm, shake your derriere
You’re rocking to the beat without a care
With the sure-shot emcees for the affair
Now, I’m not as tall as the rest of the gang
But I rap to the beat just the same
I got a little face and a pair of brown eyes
All I’m here to do ladies is hypnotize
Singing on and on and on, on and on
The beat don’t stop until the break of dawn
Singing on and on and on, on and on
Like a hot ready to pop the pop the pop dibbie dibbie
Pop the pop, pop, you don’t dare stop
Come alive y’all gimme what you got

I guess by now you can take a hunch
And find that I am the baby of the bunch
But that’s okay, I still keep in stride
Cause all I’m here to do is just wiggle your behind
Singing on and on and on, on and on
The beat don’t stop until the break of dawn
Singing on and on and on, on and on
Rock rock y’all get on the floor

[I’m gonna freak ya here I’m gonna freak you there
I’m gonna move you outta this atmosphere

Cause I’m one of a kind and I’ll shock your mind
I’ll put t-t-tickets in your behind
I said 1-2-3-4, come on, girls, get on the floor
A-come alive, y’all gimme what ya got
Cause I’m guaranteed to make you rock
I said 1-2-3-4, tell me Wonder Mike what are you waiting for?

I said a hip hop the hippie the hippie
To the hip hip hop and you don’t stop
The rock it to the bang bang boogie
Say up jump the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat

Skiddlee beebop a we rock a scoobie doo
And guess what, America: we love you
Cause ya rock and ya roll with so much soul
You could rock ’til you’re a hundred and one years old
I don’t mean to brag, I don’t mean to boast
But we like hot butter on a breakfast toast
Rock it up, uh, baby bubba
Baby bubba to the boogie the bang bang the boogie
To the beat beat, it’s so unique
Come on, everybody, and dance to the beat

Have you ever went over a friend’s house to eat
And the food just ain’t no good?
I mean the macaroni’s soggy, the peas are mushed
And the chicken tastes like wood
So you try to play it off like you think you can
By saying that you’re full
And then your friend says “momma, he’s just being polite
He ain’t finished, uh-uh, that’s bull”
So your heart starts pumping and you think of a lie
And you say that you already ate
And your friend says “man there’s plenty of food”
So you pile some more on your plate
While the stinky food’s steaming your mind starts to dreaming
Of the moment that it’s time to leave
And then you look at your plate and your chicken’s slowly rotting
Into something that looks like cheese
Oh so you say that’s it I got to leave this place
I don’t care what these people think
I’m just sitting here making myself nauseous
With this ugly food that stinks
So you bust out the door while its still closed
Still sick from the food you ate
And then you run to the store for quick relief
From a bottle of kaopectate
And then you call your friend two weeks later
To see how he has been
And he says “I understand about the food
Baby but bubba, we’re still friends”

With a hip hop the hippie the hippie
To the hip hip hop and you don’t stop
The rock it to the bang bang boogie
Say up jump the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat…

She Can Bring Him Such Misery

So I am hoping that the music choices this week are not going too drag us all down as we soldier on through this National Lockdown. I have picked a song that mentions misery, but in some ways it is a feel good song – it is about love for a woman.

This is a track that belongs on every romance compilation – Percy Sledge singing “When A Man Loves A Woman”.

Credits: Calvin Houston Lewis and Andrew James Wright

When a man loves a woman,
Can’t keep his mind on nothin’ else,
He’d change the world for the good thing he’s found.
If she is bad, he can’t see it,
She can do no wrong,
Turn his back on his best friend if he put her down.
When a man loves a woman,
He’ll spend his very last dime
Tryin’ to hold on to what he needs.
He’d give up all his comforts
And sleep out in the rain,
If she said that’s the way
It ought to be.
Well, this man loves you, woman.
I gave you everything I have,
Tryin’ to hold on to your heartless love.
Baby, please don’t treat me bad.
When a man loves a woman,
Down deep in his soul,
She can bring him such misery.
If she is playin’ him for a fool,
He’s the last one to know.
Lovin’ eyes can never see.
When a man loves a woman
He can do her no wrong,
He can never want
Some other girl.
Yes,When a man loves a woman
I know exactly how he feels,
‘Cause baby, baby, you’re my world
When a man loves a woman….

He Drinks Coffee At Cafe Espresso

I’m picking a song for Jim’s coffee house sung by the legend Ella Fitzgerald. I think it’s been covered by other artists, but I cant get enough of watching her working it throughout this song. She is beyond cool.

Credits: André Previn and Paul Francis Webster.

I’m out doin’ the usual places
And I’m livin’ it, like young
Then I dig me this face of all faces
He’s the craziest, like young

He drinks coffee at Cafe Espresso
He reads Kerouac, like young
He goes where all the angry young men go
Recites poetry, like young

We start blowin’ the pad around ‘leven
And we’re homin’ it, like now
We spin records on cloud number seven
And he’s reachin’ me, like wow

I’m all unstrung ’cause, man
He’s got me feelin’ like young
If he were to brush me and go
I’m starting to wear my hair again
Like a square again

I keep gettin’ the kookiest notion
I think maybe it’s like love
I’ve been feelin’ a crazy emotion
I think, baby, it’s like love

Now we’re ridin’ a rainbow to Cloudsville
And we’re makin’ it like young
Love soft as April snow
Love warm as candle glow
Love, love is easy to go

I’m all unstrung ’cause, man
He’s got me feelin’ like young
Without him I’m no good at all
Without him I’m less than a decimal
Infinitesimal

I keep gettin’ the kookiest notion
I think maybe it’s like love
I’ve been feelin’ a crazy emotion
I think, baby, it’s like love

Now we’re ridin’ a rainbow to Cloudsville or Wowsville
We’re makin’ it, makin’ it like, like, like young

Even If The Skies Get Rough

So today’s theme from Jim has given me the chance to choose a song I have loved from the first time I heard it. I think it’s one of those hearts that gets across a lot of feelings that you might never be able to say to someone.

This is “I Won’t Give Up” from Jason Mraz.

CREDITS: Jason Mraz and Michael Natter

When I look into your eyes
It’s like watching the night sky
Or a beautiful sunrise
Well, there’s so much they hold
And just like them old stars
I see that you’ve come so far
To be right where you are
How old is your soul?

Well, I won’t give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love
I’m still looking up

And when you’re needing your space
To do some navigating
I’ll be here patiently waiting
To see what you find

‘Cause even the stars they burn
Some even fall to the earth
We’ve got a lot to learn
God knows we’re worth it
No, I won’t give up

I don’t wanna be someone who walks away so easily
I’m here to stay and make the difference that I can make
Our differences they do a lot to teach us how to use
The tools and gifts we got, yeah, we got a lot at stake
And in the end, you’re still my friend at least we did intend
For us to work we didn’t break, we didn’t burn
We had to learn how to bend without the world caving in
I had to learn what I’ve got, and what I’m not
And who I am

I won’t give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love
I’m still looking up, I’m still looking up

Well, I won’t give up on us (no I’m not giving up)
God knows I’m tough enough (I am tough, I am loved)
We got a lot to learn (we’re alive, we are loved)
God knows we’re worth it (and we’re worth it)

I won’t give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love
I’m still looking up
